Google Seeks TV Connection With Media Server
Jun 29th
Delivering movies through a Gadget
Google Media Player became the latest UPnP driven application to offer a way to view images and videos stored on a computer on one’s television.
Plenty of opportunities to watch PC-stored movies and other content on a big-screen TV exist. Commercial and free software packages enable the connection between all that content stored on a hard drive, and a more comfortable viewing experience outside the computer screen.
With Google and Microsoft seemingly rivaling each other all over the software map, it’s almost an afterthought that Google would deliver something that competes, on one feature anyway, with Windows Media Player.
The Google Media Server contains, what else, Google technology for finding and sending images and videos from the computer to UPnP-enabled hardware.
Google Media Server is one of the company’s many gadgets, sharing technology with Google Desktop. It’s likely that many people with an interest in sharing content with their TVs have a solution in place already, but the dedicated Google fans may find this alternative to Windows Media Player compelling enough to test.
Giving Props To Essential SEO
Jun 29th
The basics never go out of style
Search engine optimization covers an array of topics, from a decent title tag to the world of viral video and social media connections. It’s the basics that matter most.
If you spend much time online, there’s a good chance you have a greater affinity for technology than the average person. Something new comes along, and you’re looking for a reason to give it a try. It’s fun, and it could be rewarding too.
Lisa Barone looked at the current state of search marketing and SEO, courtesy of Andrew Goodman’s assessment of SEO and recent trends. There’s a lot of curiosity and love for the latest and greatest ways to attract attention, she noted:
There may be great value in spending the time and money creating Facebook applications, toying with viral YouTube videos, and seeing if MySpace is filled with anything other than strippers and bands, but that often comes with an awfully low return on investment compared to the traditional stuff.
All the latest technologies have their place. In a number of examples, social media and viral videos brought tremendous attention to their points of interest.
Such potential should not be ignored, but Barone cautioned against getting too caught up in them. Content building, link development, and researching analytics for trends and necessary adjustments may not be the flavor of the month.
But like a vanilla cone, they still deliver what people really want when things get hot.
Report: 2011′s Online Ad Market To Be Worth $106B
Jun 29th
Most money should get spent in U.S.
The worldwide Internet ad market will be an exciting place for the next few years, according to a new report from IDC. By the time 2011 rolls around, online advertising still won’t have replaced traditional methods, but a whole lot more money will be involved than what we see today.
IDC believes around $65 billion is going to be spent this year. In three years’ time, a little over $106 billion should change hands. John Gantz, IDC’s chief research officer, observed in a statement, “Compared to more mature types of advertising, Internet advertising is growing at a phenomenal rate.
Come 2011, the U.S. will continue to hold the lead in online ad spending. Central and Eastern Europe are expected to achieve the biggest objective increases. And the most impressive catching-up in relation to traditional ads should take place in Western Europe.
Gantz then noted, “But Internet advertising is still relatively new and growing from a much smaller base. By the end of the forecast period, spending for Internet advertising will trail direct mail – the third largest form of advertising – by more than $30 billion, while spending on TV and print ads will each be nearly twice as great as for online ads.”
So we’re still not near a point at which every advertising dollar will go into online efforts. It doesn’t look like the recession will put much of a damper on the industry, though.
ICANN Approves Expansion Of Domain Names
Jun 29th
Calls it an Internet milestone
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has voted to approve lifting restrictions on the classification of domain names, allowing for new customized Web addresses.
A unanimous vote by ICANN members at a public meeting in Paris paves the way for businesses and individuals to adopt domain names based on any combination of letters. Previously domain names had been limited by geography.
“This was an extremely successful meeting that will be remembered as a milestone in the development of the Internet,” said Peter Dengate Thrush, ICANN’s Board Chairman. “New generic Top Level Domains and Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) will open up the Internet and make it look as diverse as the people who use it.”
ICANN also approved top – level domain names in scripts including Arabic, Cyrillic and other non-Latin scripts. It passed a resolution to eliminate domain tasting, a practice of using the grace periods to register domain names in bulk to see which ones are profitable.
The new domains could cost as much as $100,000 to register, and will require a large amount of recourses to maintain.
ICANN said it would begin accepting applications for new domains in April of 2009, with the first expected to be in operation by the end of the year. The system is open to anyone, but applicants have to have a “business plan and technical capacity” to be eligible.
Disputed domains will be auctioned to the highest bidder, but in some cases intellectual property law may help a business acquire a name. ICANN will be able to reject a domain on “morality or public order” grounds where it would then be decided by an international arbitration committee.
The largest top-level domain is .com, with 71 million addresses, followed by .de, the country code for Germany, with 11.2 million and .net, with 10.6 million. The fastest growing is .cn, for China, with 10.5 million addresses.
